The worst innings in youth baseball happen in the first one. Kids show up cold, throw the first hard ball of the day from shortstop to first, and either airmail it or tweak a shoulder. A consistent ten-minute warmup fixes both the physical and the mental side. Run the same routine every time so it becomes automatic.
Minutes 0-2: Move the body
Skip the static toe-touches — young muscles warm up by moving. Run two easy foul-pole-to-foul-pole jogs, then a dynamic series down the line and back: high knees, butt kicks, lunges with a torso twist, and side shuffles. The goal is light sweat and a higher heart rate, not exhaustion.
Minutes 2-5: Arm care (non-negotiable)
This is the part coaches skip and regret. Start partners close — about 10 feet — on two knees (see the two-knee drill) and throw soft for one minute. Then stand and back up to a comfortable distance, throwing on a line with intent but not max effort. The rule: never let a kid's first throw of the day be a hard one. Build to distance gradually over the three minutes.
Minutes 5-7: Quick-hands and footwork
Pair players for a rapid-fire flip drill: 10 short underhand flips back and forth working on soft hands and a quick transfer. Then a 30-second round of fast feet over a line — chop the feet, stay on the balls of the feet. This wakes up the reflexes you need on the first ground ball.
Minutes 7-9: Position-specific reps
Split into infield and outfield. Infielders take five short hops and five backhands. Outfielders take five fly balls and practice the crow-hop throw to a cutoff. Catchers throw down to second twice. Pitchers get on the mound and throw five to eight controlled pitches. Everyone touches a live ball before the umpire says play.
Minute 9-10: The huddle
Bring the team in for sixty seconds. Name one team focus for the day — "we hustle on and off the field" or "two-strike approach: shorten up." Keep it to a single idea. End with a quick, loud team breakdown. The mental cue matters as much as the physical prep; it tells twelve kids that the game has started.
Make it automatic
Post the routine on a laminated card in the dugout and assign a "warmup captain" who rotates each week. Within three weeks the kids run it themselves while you talk to the umpire and set your lineup. A team that warms up the same way every time looks sharp before the first pitch — and other teams notice.
Ten minutes. Same every game. Fewer sore arms, fewer first-inning errors, and a team that arrives ready to play.
